This was the worst christian movie I ever reviewed. They praised its acting performances and technical achievements, but criticized its pacing, thin screenwriting, and lack of character development. I love the sequence where after everything that's happened, Moses just turns up on his wife's (Zipporah...who has facial tattoos??) EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS has a somber, dreary quality, punctuated by a thrumming, droning music score. As for Biblical accuracy, well starters I don't believe Moses has ever been depicted as a hardened, sword wielding badass in the Egyptian army, plus we never really see him with a staff, he's mostly got his ornate sword. Moses returns from exile and demands that Ramses let his people go, but the arrogant ruler is unmoved, leading to a battle of divine wills. If you wanted to make a historical about medieval knights then sure, Bale could be your man, but ancient Egypt and Israelites? Movie Review. As for historical accuracy, well that's the tricky bit isn't it because no one really knows if any of this is actually true, or real. | Rating: C Scott's film eschews all the Hollywood glam of DeMille's biblical epic. Exodus: Gods and Kings review – holy Moses, wholly acceptable for the devout. Being a Scott epic there was never a doubt in my mind this film wouldn't look awesomely slick, and I was correct, this film does indeed look awesomely slick. Please reference “Error Code 2121” when contacting customer service. Highly Recommended. Bale's Moses actually argues with God in this film, well the young boy version of God (eh?). At the start of the ten plagues some fishermen are brutally eaten alive by crocodiles which kick starts the blood rivers plague, not sure this is in the Bible, not sure why this was needed at all, just to spice things up a bit huh. That the film's only exuberant display of cinematic prowess is reserved for an extended 30-minute sequence of God raining His wrath down on the ruling class won't be lost on viewers in the year 2014, which has seen so much racial injustice... Ridley Scott may be 77, but he's making films with the energy and ambition of a man half his age. Might be acceptable, if all you need is pretty sights. The start of the movie was always gonna be the most impressive visually with the CGI assisted cityscapes of Memphis in Egypt, the CGI assisted recreations of the cities ancient architecture, the CGI assisted horse and chariot battle between the Egyptians and the Hittites, and of course all that lovely yellowy, sandy desert which, for some reason, always looks amazingly photogenic. As the film progresses and we delve further into religious territory things do get somewhat less visually impressive and more...errmm...religious? This was the worst christian movie I ever reviewed. Ridley Scott remains a director with a wide range of topics, but also of quality. The scenes depicting ancient Egypt are truly stunning to say the least, as are the spectacular battles scenes. This one's in the lower third. You're almost there! It's humanistic and so gritty you'll feel like taking a bath afterwards, but not in the Nile, which is turned a lurid blood red as one of the ten plagues. Well issues on race aside, Christian Bale is clearly miscast here, I swear its like having Batman on God's side fighting the Egyptians. Ridley Scott’s 3D Moses biopic is very long, very camp and very grim. However, his Moses is a sullen and aloof man who is never compelling. Same could also be said for John Turturro who looked fab as Seti I, and of course Ben Kingsley who always fits in any historical epic of any time period, its virtually an obligatory move to cast the man. Hell there is no real proof of Moses or Ramesses even being the pharaoh mentioned in the Bible! [Full review in Spanish]. | Rating: D+ Some feel oddly artificial here, though. I'm afraid the same could be said for Sigourney Weaver who sounds all wrong and actually acts badly to boot! [Bale] a brilliant thespian. Mainly, it's what most of us would expect, for better and worse. The one thing that people approaching Exodus: Gods and Kings from either a religious or secular background will be able to agree upon is a lack of faith in Scott's devotion to making a good film. John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley add support in this sometimes campy and shallow, sometimes solemn, but mostly absorbing interpretation of the story of Moses. Too solemn in its mighty grandeur, Scott's treatment seems already mummified. This guy just doesn't fit in this role at all, he is far to British for a start (I can tell) and doesn't even try to quell his accent. This is an excellent and enjoyable epic regardless if one is religious or secular, and one should not take this film too seriously, as it is, only pure entertainment and an artist's own unique vision. Christian Bale plays an intense Moses in Ridley Scott's Biblical epic, Exodus. By the way, many people (including Christians and Jews) will try to psychoanalyze the filmmakers and the actors, but speculating on their decisions and comments is a futile exercise. The story of how the Israelites left their lives of slavery in Egypt behind them, and travelled the massive distance all the way to what is today Israel. Obviously a religious offering, but in order to make it more appealing to the masses, they toned down the religious parts and made it more of a historical disaster flick with a fantasy element. I got the impression this was an opportunity for a cash grab on the popular sword and sandal genre truth be told. Yet that's what director Ridley Scott did with "Exodus: Gods and Kings," the Biblical tale most memorably put on film in Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 version, "The Ten Commandments." You'll feel like you're sitting through a boring sermon, delivered by somebody who had too much to drink the night before and just wants to go back to bed. He also looks nothing like a person from this era in my opinion, I'm not saying I know what Hebrew people from around 1300 BC would look like, but Bale just doesn't seem to fit this look if you ask me, he also looks too modern if that makes any sense. and to receive email from Rotten Tomatoes and Fandango. Eventually he sends his troops into the villages to rape and pillage, then just for good measure burn their abodes down, you know...just so they know he means business. Ridley Scott took far too many liberties and the acts of Moses are not as illustrated in the Bible. The shame is, Exodus: Gods and Kings actually starts to do this. Just below that it reads "Ticket Confirmation#:" followed by a 10-digit number. The reliance on CGI becomes greater for the ten plagues naturally, we less of the beautiful Egyptian cities and culture in all its glory as we focus more on Moses and his people in rags, and of course things just become more fanciful. But God has a mission for Moses: Free the Israelites from slavery. Twas a harrowing journey but luckily old Moses had God (Yahweh) on his side which certainly gave the home team an advantage over the dastardly Egyptians who were after them.
